Create A Space To Fight The Winter Blues

This time of year can be hard wherever you are in the country; the holidays are over and spring still feels like ages away. It's easy to be hit by the winter blues, but a great way to beat the blues is to take action! Plan ahead! Move forward!
Judging by the calls, emails and contacts we get this time of year - many people decide to finally take action on their home improvement to-do lists. Kitchen and bath remodels still top the list of popular projects, even this time of year, but many people choose to start timely projects: Preparing their home for the warm weather to come!
The most popular ways to do this are:

Sunrooms!

Outdoor Kitchens!

Decks!

And, of course, the yearly spring cleaning is also a popular option. (See Home Maintenance) What about you? What do you long to do this time of year? And where does your brain wander on the cold, gray days?

For A Furry Cause

Who can resist a wet nose and a wagging tail? Well not us! When one of our clients asked us to donate to a cause she was passionate about, we had to help. AK donated a gift certificate for Adopt a Golden Atlanta's silent auction at their Golden Gala.
These heroic doggie rescuers have saved over 2,500 dogs. The goal of their volunteer run non-profit is to find loving permanent homes for Golden Retrievers in order to prevent them from becoming strays or adding to the shelter overpopulation. This is great news for ALL breeds because the space is desperately needed. Nearly one cat or dog is put down in the US every 8 seconds. Shocking, isn't it? The Adopt a Golden group wants to help put a stop to this through education by informing and assisting the metropolitan Atlanta general public, and dog owners specifically, regarding issues such as responsible pet ownership, spay/neutering, obedience training, and veterinary/specialists referrals.
Want to help? Volunteer, donate or adopt! See Adopt a Golden's website: http://www.adoptagoldenatlanta.com/
Thinking of a home renovation? We think one of these cute guys below would really compliment your newly remodeled space! Every new floor looks better with just a little dog hair ;)

They Can't Take Our Freedom (to cook with big pots)

Anyone who has been waiting to jump into the world of induction cooking is celebrating with a Braveheart-esque moment and the release of the Thermador Freedom Induction Cooktop. We've been reading blogs from kitchen designers around the country who are all excited to test and introduce this product to clients. Why?
Well, for anyone new to our blog, induction technology uses magnets instead of a burner to heat what is inside of a pot; not the pot itself. (The pot must be a conducive material appropriate for induction cooking) Induction cooktops can generally boil 8 cups of water in 1 1/2 minutes while keeping the cooking surface completely cool. This is an incredibly attractive feature for those concerned with aging-in-place or those with young children in the home...or simply those with sub-par patience.
So what is so neat about the new Thermador Freedom? It is a Full Service induction appliance. You are no longer limited to the small cooking circles which many domestic chefs complained were not large enough, or did not fit their cookware correctly. A good fit is essential for induction cooking, otherwise the pot does not heat properly. The Thermador Freedom also uses natural mapping user interface feature - it recognizes size, shape and position of the pots. If you move the pots while you're cooking, the cooktop will sense this - recognize the move on the control panel - and adjust the cooking position. Here's a demonstration:

The Thermador Freedom cooktop will be available in July of 2012 and is set to retail for $4,949. May be a budget stretch for a typical kitchen remodel, but is sure to be a must-have for some inspired chefs!
What do you think? Is this a must-have?

Johns Creek Full Home Remodel: Update

Bathrooms & Kitchens & Floors - Oh My!
To refresh your memory...This 20+ year old home in Johns Creek, Georgia is undergoing a neutral, practical and beautiful remodel in preparation for sale in the not so distant future.
See how the home looked before, and how it looks today - nearly complete!

Changing or redoing flooring in a home is a dramatic change. Replacing carpeting, or adding or redoing hardwoods is something many buyers look for when thinking about putting an offer on a home. Everyone loves the idea of moving into a "new" home in an established neighborhood!
Though a little dark, you can see the dramatic new tile in this bathroom makes a real statement without a terribly large investment!

The cabinets are drying! After receiving their first paint, the cabinets are already changing the look of this kitchen. Look what that classy backsplash does to change the whole feel of this kitchen! And how about the wood floors? What an improvement!

At the owner's request, the vessel sink was installed as such. Would you anticipate such modern flair in an older home? Excellent, practical selections will let the new owner build on a upscale neutral palette.

Scrub Your Indoor Air Clean

We saw a post by Laura Judy on the Atlanta Home Improvement website that we thought would be a great follow-up to our previous bamboo post! An easy way to boost your 2012 resolution for good health is to start with the air you breathe. Adding some specific plants to your home can help you scrub your air clean! One of these plants? Bamboo!

Judy writes, "Going green can be interpreted quite literally: Houseplants are a beautiful addition to your home that also come with eco-friendly benefits. Plants convert carbon dioxide to oxygen, providing clean air, and they also trap and absorb some of the pollutants inside our homes, according to Bodie Pennisi, an extension floriculture specialist with The University of Georgia (UGA) Extension Service. While you can’t rely on plants to completely rid your home of these pollutants, they definitely can’t hurt."

Cleanairgardening.com posted a list of 15 common houseplants that have been studied by NASA (Yes, NASA is in on this. Apparently they want to know what to furnish the first moon condos with.) and found to be the best air scrubbers! So here they are, in no particular order:

1. Philodendron scandens `oxycardium', heartleaf philodendron
2. Philodendron domesticum, elephant ear philodendron
3. Dracaena fragrans `Massangeana', cornstalk dracaena
4. Hedera helix, English ivy
5. Chlorophytum comosum, spider plant
6. Dracaena deremensis `Janet Craig', Janet Craig dracaena
7. Dracaena deremensis `Warneckii', Warneck dracaena
8. Ficus benjamina, weeping fig
9. Epipiremnum aureum, golden pothos
10. Spathiphyllum `Mauna Loa', peace lily
11. Philodendron selloum, selloum philodendron
12. Aglaonema modestum, Chinese evergreen
13. Chamaedorea sefritzii, bamboo or reed palm
14. Sansevieria trifasciata, snake plant
15. Dracaena marginata , red-edged dracaena
